It's Like Riding a Bike: How to make learning last a lifetime
We have all been told it is our responsibility to prepare our students for the future. We are given standards that allow for college and career readiness, yet all too often in schools we still find ourselves "teaching to the test". We are in search of gimmicks, curriculum, or motivational strategies that never quite deliver what we are looking for. We have all heard the saying "Once we learn to ride a bike, we never forget." Riding a bike is a complex task yet we can get our kids to master it before they even enter school. In this session we will use the bike riding metaphor to explore a seven step process that allows student learning to last, just like riding a bike.

Baby Steps: Small Shifts to Amplify Student Voice
"It means setting small, reasonable goals, one day at a time...one tiny step at a time" - Dr. Leo Marvin from What About Bob?

This session is aiming to give and spark ideas about how teachers can make small changes and small mind shifts that will lead to amplifying student voice in their classrooms.  Student voice and creativity are the underlying themes that tie together the topics du jour in education (Visible Thinking, Innovation, Inquiry, Standard's Based Grading, NPDL, etc.). So where do teachers even start? Can all of these topics be synergized into a few concepts that make it managable for teachers to implement?  From an AP Economics teacher, Student Council Advisor, and Social Studies Consultant, come see a unique perspective on how to be practical and the "how" teachers can implement a "21st Century" classroom environment.

Outreach: Authenticity and Engagement
How to integrate Social Emotional Learning at all levels. In the last twenty years there have been a number of studies done on the markers of an engaged student. Is it genetic? Home life? Learning environment? There is no easy answer, but in looking over these findings one element has risen to the top again and again. Authenticity. In an overworked system, it is often hard to create an authentic experience for each individual student in the classroom. This is how the Outreach program came to be. Come and learn about how we are educating students in authentic leadership, helping them to realize their potential, and using those lessons to help students in younger grades experience what it means to belong to an educational system...not just get through it.

Effective Coaching Practices
Inspired and supported teachers often have the biggest impact on student learning. What measures can schools put in place to ensure all teachers are properly supported, effectively developed in their practice, and placed in the best possible position to succeed for their students? Effective coaching practices are built around a shared vision of success between the teacher and the coach. Leveraging professional relationships, supporting the individual development of both teacher and coach, and creating an environment that values professional growth are all paramount to building effective coaching practices within your school.

Surviving the Endurance Sport of Teaching
There’s no doubt that as educators, our greatest responsibility is to those children sitting (or running around) in front of us. However, collegiate educational pools are drying up, and many of those who have remained in the classroom are leaving the profession in droves. The dilemma here is that as educators, we cannot be the best for our students if we do not take care of ourselves first!

This notion was the inspiration and basis for my upcoming book (published by Impress Books Fall 2019) Teach4Endurance: Surviving the Swim, Bike and Run in Today's Classroom. Within its 33 chapters, I share lessons I've learned in surviving multiple Ironman races and how those lessons have crossed over into my role as an educator (and honestly life). When you think about, the academic school year is an endurance event. One that if you don't take proper care, you will certainly burn out.

Therefore, come hang out for a bit to go through some "workouts" with me. Don't worry, we're not going for a swim, bike, or run today (unless you really want to:) We will be going through 4 chapters (time permitting) and their coinciding workouts. Be ready to write, discuss, share, move, and possibly sing. For a productive day, come ready to particpate and share. An example is given below for one chapter:

Chapter 7: Be a Jedi in the Water
Sprint Workout: Floor Plan Dreams
70.3 Workout: How Would You Feel?
Ironman Workout: Transfer Ownership

Hope to see you. It's time to get to work!

Often when teachers review, they give students a study guide or packet to work on, that does not always promote student engagement. The Positivity Project: Empowering America's youth to build positive relationships.
This presentation provides an introduction to the #OtherPeopleMatter mindset and The Positivity Project; implementation at the elementary and secondary level, and the effects since implementation. The Positivity Project was founded on the work of Dr. Chris Peterson’s Positive Psychology work at the University of Michigan. P2’s mission is to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in us all. P2 aims to partner with schools across the country and equip educators with the training, strategy, and resources to teach their students positive psychology’s 24 character strengths. Positive psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living — and maintains that what is good in life is as genuine as what is bad. Character strengths define who, not what, a person is. Ranging from bravery and forgiveness to integrity and gratitude, these character strengths are the foundation of The Positivity Project’s model. The premise is simple, but the results will be profound. Together, we will create citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country by internalizing the belief that “Other People Matter.”

Developing Lateral Thinking in the Classroom
In 1967, the author Edward de Bono coined the term "lateral thinking." Compared to traditional critical (logical/vertical) thinking, lateral thinking relies on imagination and creativity. As the global economy and the workforce needed to compete in it continues to change, lateral thinking skills will be called upon with greater frequency. This presentation seeks to reintroduce lateral thinking to the educational vernacular, and to discuss the purposeful and active incorporation of the teaching of thinking across all curricula. Attendees will be challenged to examine their own biases and styles of thinking. The utility of lateral thinking will be explored in comparison to critical thinking. Participants will learn to look for opportunities to encourage the skill of thinking, not just correct answers. By transforming their approach to developing thinking amongst students, educators can help transform the learning environment in a way that increases creativity, inquiry, and "out of the box" results.

Standards Based Grading: What, why, and how?
High quality feedback is a key component for effective instruction and student learning, yet in schools we often try to summarize all of our feedback into a single letter grade to communicate with parents and students. In this session, we will explore why standards based grading is a key driver towards student success and the immediate steps you can take in your classroom and school to get the ball rolling.

Diving Into Collaborative Inquiry
This session is for all grade levels. Nothing intrigues a student more than seeing something they cannot explain and then being challenged through collaborative inquiry to solve the puzzle. This presentation begins with a phenomenon to pique student curiosity followed by a challenge to the students. The phenomenon stays the same – but the challenge to the student varies depending on the grade level. The result is a demonstration on how to effectively increase student understanding of a scientific principle by using 3-Dimensional, inquiry-based strategies that become more sophisticated as the student progresses through the grade levels.

Learn how to use a KLEWS board in your classroom! This is a wonderful tool to help gather group understanding and make thinking public. KLEWS boards lend themselves to using the NGSS standards with any materials your district may use. It is student centered and promotes visible thinking. We will also explore using Investigation Notebooks as a tool for student data, thinking and learning. Students learn to write, draw and think like real scientists do in their work!

Autism and Education: A Changing Mindset
This school year I attended the Statewide Autism Resources and Training: Intensive Training (START IT) modules at Oakland schools. We learned about many strategies that were helpful. However a module on self-regulation changed my mindset and caused me to reflect on my teaching practices. I have since shared this information with staff. I will be presenting on how this change in my mindset impacted the way I teach and the way I incorporate students interests. This change resulted in a significant improvement in student behavior, engagent and academic success.

Culturally Responsive Teaching
What is culturally responsive teaching, and how might culturally responsive practices meet the social and academic needs of students? The session highlights conceptions and tools teachers and school leaders might consider to address and meet the needs of all students, especially students living below the poverty line, those whose first language is not English, those who are Black and Brown, and those who might experience outside of school challenges across our state. Instructional practices that are culturally responsive to the very humanity of students will be addressed for classroom and school transformation.
